AMBER MEULENIJZER
Amber Meulenijzer (BE) explores the tension between sound and visual art in her artistic practice. She combines everyday wonder and intuition with a deep-rooted curiosity about the properties of different materials. Silence and the role of the spectator are central, as she plays with the concepts of presence and absence. Where do sound and material meet? When does the ear guide the eye? What does the body need to hear? Who sings and who listens?
Amber Meulenijzer presents a continuous in situ composition at Groen Waterke.
14:00 - 18:00CHRISTIAN HANSEN
Visual artist Christian Hansen (DK) investigates the transparency of sound over time. He creates connections between sounds, acoustics, architecture, and landscapes. Since 2015, Christian has explored these questions in his ongoing project Floating Keyboards, an installation that he has presented in numerous inspiring locations in countries such as Denmark, Finland, Portugal, and Belgium
The synthesizers create a continuously changing collective drone that interacts with the stream, the buildings of the cultural center and the conservatory in the Melaan.
15:00 - 16:00PIERRE BERTHET AND RIE NAKAJIMA
Pierre Berthet (BE) and Rie Nakajima (JP) are a duo of experimental sound artists. Under the project name Dead Plants & Living Objects, they deliver a performance in which they create unique soundscapes with everyday objects and natural elements.
Water dripping into buckets, resonating stones, homemade motors, and mobiles: the interventions of Berthet and Nakajima set a heterogeneous ensemble of sounding objects in motion, exploring the space and building a balance of vibrating tension.
16:00 - 17:00PETER JACQUEMYN
Peter Jacquemyn (BE) moves effortlessly between two worlds. As a sculptor, he works on tree trunks with an axe and chainsaw, and as a musician, he explores the boundaries of his beloved double bass. Anything can serve as a tool: bows, dented cans, plastic bags, crumpled paper, mutes, horns, and more. His passion for strings and spatial art is also expressed in the installation Long Strings, in which he plays meters-long, floating piano strings to create a three-dimensional soundscape. On the occasion of LEK, he installs his Long Strings in the beautiful Predikherenkerk.
17:00 - 18:00CAROLINE PROFANTER
Caroline Profanter (IT) is a composer and performer of electroacoustic and acousmatic music. Since 2017, she has been part of the artistic team at Q-O2, a workspace for experimental music and sound art in Brussels. Her work explores a rich range of multichannel sound systems, live electronics, and powerful performances. Inspired by field recordings of everyday sounds, she creates intriguing sonic narratives.
At LEK, Profanter surprises with a live composition, using the sound and movement of water as her starting point.
20:00 - 21:00DOLPHINS INTO THE FUTURE
Lieven Martens (BE), better known as Dolphins Into The Future, is a musician and sound artist. He creates experimental and atmospheric music that combines elements of field recordings, electronic music, and contemporary classical music. His work is characterized by a profound fascination with nature and underwater life, which is reflected in compositions that feel like auditory journeys through underwater landscapes.
21:00 - 22:00TOMOKO SAUVAGE
Tomoko Sauvage (JP/FR) is a musician and sound artist, known for her unique use of water as a musical instrument. She has previously composed mesmerizing soundscapes using water-filled bowls and hydrophones, combining ritual gestures and the unpredictable dynamics of water with elements of ambient and experimental music. Her live performances are both visually and aurally enchanting, creating a meditative and introspective atmosphere.

As part of the city festival Construct Europe, the Mechelen platform Grambacht curates the LEK festival focused on adventurous music, sound art, and more. LEK centers on water in its broadest sense. Water is everywhere; it is also a current topic increasingly linked to ecological awareness. This theme is reflected in the festival's program, which engages with the Mechelen context. Through the Dijle River and a fine network of uncovered streams and water features, water takes a prominent place.
On Sunday, September 22, 2024, we invite the public to engage with this universal and timely story through music and performances that bring life to various locations in the city center. A striking mix of contemporary acts within the realms of music and sound art will engage in a fascinating dialogue with the richness of water in and around Mechelen. The afternoon program features performances at various locations in the city center, while the evening program with concerts will take place at the kunstencentrum nona.
